Naussbaum

Naussbaum

Nussbaum’s argument is the fact that liberal arts is slowly falling off the map. On page 2 it talks about how the U.S. is cutting away humanities and arts schools in primary and secondary school. On page nine the last paragraph states that it doesn’t just prepare students for being a citizen of the world but it teaches them so much more.

Nussbaum writes: “Another aspect of the U.S. educational tradition that stubbornly refuses assimilation into the growth-directed model is its characteristic emphasis on the active participation of the child in inquiry and questioning” (18). Work outward from this quote. What is the growth-directed model? How is an emphasis on inquiry and questioning at the core of a liberal education? Draw a text to self relationship by testing Nussbaum’s claims in this section of her text against your own lived experience as a U.S. learner.

I think this quote helps explain that a liberal arts education helps with teaching students to think more critically and deeper. It is very important to teach students and younger generations to do this because it will help the country grow in the future and become much more civilized. With my own experiences, I have learned that it is okay to get something incorrect or wrong, but as long as I try my hardest to find the solution or answer it is okay because I still learned from it and it made me smarter. As long as you are learning and working through the process of problem solving, it is good for you and you are getting smarter.

On page two, second paragraph. This paragraph really sticks out to me because it stresses that libral arts is an important education and a lot of countries don’t really see that and are getting rid of it. I think this is the last thing that we should be doing. It shows people very valuable lessons in life and many countries who are a democracy it helps teach future leaders. Democracy came from the liberal arts and I think schools should continue to teach it.
