Nussbaum 3-4
“Meanwhile, children learn from the adult societies around them, which typically direct this “projective disgust” onto one or more concrete subordinate groups.” pg. 33 I think this is very true. Kids follow who their parents are and slowly mold themselves into how they see their parents. They take in all their views and believe in what they believe in. But I don’t think this is true for everyone. Some kids find their own ways and change how they see the world because they simply just don’t see it the same way as their parents.
“Our mind does not gain true freedom by acquiring materials for knowledge and possessing other people’s ideas but by forming its own standards of judgment and producing its own thoughts.” pg. 47. I really like this quote because it explains liberal arts and how it makes you a smarter person. You can obviously learn from just reading and taking in information but you’ll never really learn how to do things yourself if you learn like that. You get no experiences that help shape you and turn you into a unique person. I have learned in many different ways and one of the things I could never do is just sit there and take in information.
